Ever
wondered how hospitals come up with the blood every time someone gets into a
bad accident and loses a lot of blood? Or how the blood you donate is stored,
processed, and preserved? There are some departments of a hospital that
exclusively take care of blood related issues, and they are called Blood Banks.
Blood banks usually organize drives for blood donation, other than people who
voluntarily come to the bank to donate blood. These banks obviously work
closely with hospitals, and take care of their daily blood related needs from
accidents and other complications.
When
blood is given to a patient externally, the process is called a blood
transfusion. Blood transfusion has to be a very careful process. Blood of a
different blood type that isn’t compatible with the patient’s blood can cause
definite death. That is why all blood in a blood bank is carefully tested for
type. Infected blood can also cause serious complications in the human body,
not only infecting the patient to whom the blood was given, but also destroying
the healthy blood cells in the body. Blood is a connecting medium throughout
the entire body. If the blood is not compatible or healthy, it reaches to all
organs and organ systems in the body, infecting everything in the process.
Blood donors are tested for this same reason, because it is dangerous to allow
even a little chance of infection in the body.
Blood
banks have a comprehensive system of working. Preservatives have to be added to
the blood to make it safe for storing. These preservatives have to be harmless
to the body. They should also not react with the blood and change its
composition. Blood taken from donors and stored without separating its
components is called Whole Blood. But sometimes, patients do not need blood,
but rather components of blood. These components include plasma, red blood
cells, and white blood cells. Plasma which is taken out, frozen, and brought up
for immediate use is called Freshly Frozen Plasma, whereas if it is stores for
some time before being used again, it is called Recovered Plasma. Various other
components are used for other purposes when the patient does not require Whole
blood to recover.
Some
hospitals have their own blood banks nowadays. One of these hospitals is the
