According
to the data obtained by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), hospitals
have a highly significant amount of influence on their immediate and non
immediate surroundings. Everything in a hospital, from the patient waste to
medical equipments, to precautionary measures to biomedical waste, and from
emissions to discharge, adds up to make the environment relatively unsafe. All
this has led several hospitals to take into some serious consideration their
way of running, and apply to themselves what is called now the Green Principle.
There are several ways in which every hospital on the planet makes the
environment around it a bit worse.
Mercury
usage in medical devices and equipments is one of the top factors in
environmental degradation. Mercury poisoning is a very serious issue, and the
discharge of mercury waste in nearby water bodies or garbage dumps results in
serious and deadly soil and water poisoning. This can be prevented by either
treating the mercuric waste before disposing it off, or shipping it to a
reliable facility where it can be recycled or renewed for something else.
Another
toxic example of the materials used is materials with potential toxic effects,
like the ones used in pesticides or batteries. The toxicity of pesticides or
battery acid is extremely high in nature, and even a little amount of exposure
to these can harm entire ecosystems.
Perhaps
the most important of all these factors is the question of energy consumption.
Hospitals run for twenty four hours, and consume a ridiculous amount of energy,
whether it is in lighting equipment, air supply, or water usage. These things
not only cause a serious energy problem for non renewable resources, but also
increase the costs of patient care, which reflects in the enormous amounts of
bills patients with chronic problems have to pay. All this can be prevented by
using the Green Principle. Water is treated, recycled and reused. Some
hospitals even have a water treatment facility to ensure that clean water is
available for multiple uses and wastage and pollution is minimized. For air and
light, many hospitals have now constructed their buildings in such a way that
natural light and air is used as much as possible during the day time. All this
has resulted in making hospitals cleaner, greener, and more energy efficient,
while cutting down on patient costs and making them more affordable.
Keeping
in consideration all of the stuff discussed above, one of the best hospitals to
consider which operates on the Green Principle is the Meditrina Insititute ofMedical Sciences. Situated at a prime location in Nagpur, this hospital, apart
from being highly efficient and accessible to people all over the country and
abroad, is one of the hospitals that has taken upon itself to go green. Optimum
use of natural energy sources is one of the key factors of what Meditrina
believes in. All toxic waste is treated or disposed off at reliable facilities.
Patient costs have been cut down to envelope affordability. All this has truly
put Meditrina on the International medical health care scene.
